Senior IAS officer Rajiv Gauba took charge as the new Union Home Secretary on Thursday( August 31) for a fixed two-year tenure.
Mr. Gauba, who replaced Rajiv Mehrishi, is a 1982-batch IAS officer of the Jharkhand cadre.
Mr. Gauba has joined the Home Ministry as an Officer on Special Duty (OSD) on June 27 after his appointment as the new Home Secretary. He had served as Secretary in the Union Urban Development Ministry before.
Earlier, he had worked in the Home Ministry as additional secretary, looking after the left wing extremism division, among many other responsibilities.
Born in Punjab in 1958, Gauba graduated in Physics from Patna University. He has worked as Chief Secretary of Jharkhand apart from serving at the Centre in the Ministries of Home, Defence, Environment and Forests and Department of Electronics and Information Technology.
In the past, Gauba has also represented India on the board of International Monetary Fund for four years.
